Stanfords Store Fly-Through

viz0d

The store has three floors:

  • First Floor
  • Ground Floor
  • Lower Ground Floor (also called the Basement)

The job consisted of the following stages:

  • making of general, rough floor plans (overall proportions and element-to-element relations were kept but no accurate measurements were taken)
  • gathering photo documentation for creating patterns and textures
  • creating a 3D vector model of each floor separately
  • preparing textures and images to drape them on elements
  • testing various rendering options using single and multiple frame options
  • designing fly-through paths for the recording camera
  • rendering single frames showing each floor
  • rendering along fly-through paths

The visualization includes three short fly-through movies, one for each floor. The movies are 1.5 to 2.5 minutes long each. The type of rendering chosen for the movies was not a photo realistic one due to hardware limitations Рeach movie took 12-17 hours to render.  Additionally, there are single frames rendered using more advanced options, looking slightly more realistic.

The job was done on a single HP 8510w Mobile Workstation with 4GB RAM, Core2Duo T7700 2.4GHz and Windows XP Proffesional 32bit as an operating system. Software used include Bentley Microstation v8i (no plugins/add-ons), Photoshop CS3 and VirtualDub.

The whole project took a few months due to work being done after hours, mostly evenings.

Date of completion: Autumn 2009
